West Liberty is located five miles south of I-80, at Exit 259. We are at the crossroads of Highway 6 running East/West and Highway 70 to the South. The town's ideal location provides a variety of cultural, educational and recreational opportunities. We are 20 minutes from Iowa City, the home of the University of Iowa. Less than an hour drive are the Cedar Rapids and Quad City metro areas. Historic Muscatine on the banks of the Mississippi River is only a 20 minute drive to the south. Business and Industry West Liberty Foods, a national turkey-processing plant employing over 1,100 people, was originally founded as The Louis Rich Company. Other major employers are the West Liberty School system, two implement dealers, two automobile dealers, West Liberty State Bank, Simpson Memorial Home, Florilli Corporation (trucking), Hobbs Feather Corporation, and the City of West Liberty. We have an active Chamber of Commerce, a vital downtown district boasting the recent restoration of the brick streets and installation of new street lamps and posts. There are over 35 service clubs and organizations. Community and area news can be found in the Index, a locally owned weekly newspaper since 1868. The West Liberty Community School District consists of over 1200 students in four different buildings. The new high school will be completed in January of 2005. Nearby colleges include the University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College at Iowa City, St. Ambrose University and Scott Community College in Davenport, Cornell College at Mt. Vernon, Coe College and Kirkwood Community in Cedar Rapids, and Muscatine Community College in Muscatine. Students, as seniors, have the opportunity to enroll in classes at the schools while still attending high school. Partnerships have also been established to teach advanced courses and other courses on the school grounds. Our beautiful Community Center and Child Care Center provides facilities for receptions, meetings, and social events with the capacity of 350 seated at tables. The Child Care Center is state licensed and offers care for children from birth to 5 years. West Liberty can boast of a newly expanded Carnegie Library built in 1904 with a $7,500 grant from Andrew Carnegie. Patrons have open access to 300 other libraries and Inter-Library loan through southeast Library Services.
